How to Measure for a Replacement Window Screen
Ordering a custom replacement screen is straightforward when you measure the existing screen frame carefully. Use the steps below before entering your dimensions in the custom screen builder.
What you need
- A tape measure that clearly shows 1/16-inch increments
- Your existing screen removed from the window, if possible
- A flat surface so the frame can lie straight while you measure
1. Measure WIDTH (Horizontal)
Measure from the outside edge of the left side of the aluminum frame to the outside edge of the right side. Record the measurement to the nearest 1/16 inch.
2. Measure HEIGHT (Vertical)
Measure from the outside edge of the top of the aluminum frame to the outside edge of the bottom. Record the measurement to the nearest 1/16 inch.
3. Choose the fraction carefully
Our builder separates the whole-inch measurement from the fraction. For example, a screen that measures 31 7/16 inches wide should be entered as 31 for WIDTH (Horizontal) and 7/16 for the fraction.
4. Identify the spring side
Look at your existing screen and note where the standard tension springs are located:
- Top — WIDTH (Horizontal): choose this when the springs are on the top horizontal rail.
- Side — HEIGHT (Vertical): choose this when the springs are on a vertical side rail.
- No Springs: choose this only when your existing screen does not use tension springs.
5. Confirm the frame and mesh
Match the frame finish and screen material to the options shown in the builder. Our current frame profile is 5/16 inch x 3/4 inch aluminum.
Before you place the order
- Measure the existing screen twice.
- Make sure the frame is not badly bent or distorted before using it as your reference.
- Confirm that WIDTH means horizontal and HEIGHT means vertical.
- Confirm your spring location.
- Review the final configuration shown in the builder before adding it to your cart.
